In the song “Boogie man song” Mos Def uses oxymorons and symbolism to show his feeling in the song. Mos Def employs diction that make the poem feel more dramatic such as in line seven and eight when he states ”See me, want me, give me, trust me, Feed me, fuck me, love me, touch me.” The point of view of this poem is coming from the Boggie man himself. This could be proven when he says “I am the most beautiful boggie man”. This poem reaches out to you and gives you a dramatic feeling of caring after.

The poem “Boggie man song” uses two elements of poetry. One of those elements is an oxymoron. An oxymoron is a comparison of two things that are of the opposite. Mos Def uses oxymorons in lines eleven and twelve when he says, “I am the most beautiful boogie man. The most beautiful boogie man”. He is saying he is the best looking ugly man in the world. Kind of like Shakespeare when he said, “Parting is such sweet sorrow.” Another oxymoron that Mos Def uses is on line thirteen when he says “Let me be your favorite nightmare.” In reality this line would not make any sense because nightmares are not really anybody’s favorite dreams to remember.

Another element of poetry that is found in this poem would be that it contains diction. The diction that can be proven in this poem is when Mos Def says on lines seven and eight ”See me, want me, give me, trust me, Feed me, fuck me, love me, touch me.”. He could of just said give me attention because that is basically what he is asking for, but he chose to go into depth and axplain to the reader with words of diction to what he wants. The diction of this poem makes you feel like you should appreciate people more than you usually do.

In conclusion the poem “Boogie man song” is a poem that’s makes you appreciate people and you leave I with a positive feeling.

Marijuana: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly
Rough Draft

In 1980 about half of college students had tried marijuana. Marijuana is the most widely used drug among young people. Pro legalization advocates argue that marijuana is beneficial for its medical attributes; however marijuana is a gateway drug that does not need to be legalized for its small advantages. Marijuana also hurts short term and long-term memory, and it also damages ones professional life. Therefore marijuana should not be legalized.

Although marijuana has its horrible disadvantages it does contain some advantages. One of its well talked about advantages is its health benefits. Patients receiving cannabinoids pills or who smoked marijuana had improved immune function compared with those receiving a placebo. Marijuana is used to cure various illnesses such as: nausea, glaucoma, and pain. One of THC's medical uses best supported by research is the treatment of nausea. It can improve mild to moderate nausea caused by cancer chemotherapy and help reduce nausea and weight loss in people with AIDS. In the early 1970s, scientists discovered that smoking marijuana reduced pressure in the eyes. Exactly how the cannabinoids in marijuana produce this effect isn't known. Scientists have discovered CB1 receptors in the eyes, which may provide clues for future research on how marijuana affects glaucoma. CB1 receptors are thought to be the most widely expressed Gene protein coupled receptors in the brain. People widely used marijuana for pain relief in the 1800s, and several studies have found that cannabinoids have analgesic effects. In fact, THC may work as well in treating cancer pain as codeine, a mild pain reliever (Mayo Clinic Staff). However THC weakens the users immune system that causes them to be more prone to illnesses. Marijuana causes harm to many of your organs in your body.

Many people who do not believe in marijuana do not approve of the drug because of its effect on the body. One organ that marijuana has a drastic effect on would have to be the lungs. Marijuana abuse has the potential to promote cancer of the lungs because it contains irritants and carcinogens (Kuhn). Some studies of chronic, heavy marijuana smokers show that their lungs do not produce as much airflow as the lungs of the nonsmoker do (Kuhn). In addition, solid studies have found both an abnormal clinical appearance and an abnormal organization of cells in the airways of heavy marijuana smokers relative to nonsmokers and to those who smoked tobacco alone (Kuhn). A study measured DNA damage in lung cells from marijuana smoker, tobacco smokers, and non-smokers. The study found a trend toward DNA damage in cells from marijuana smokers, regardless of whether they smoked tobacco. This suggests that marijuana smoking might predispose a person to develop lung cancer (Kuhn). Another organ that is heavily damaged by marijuana smoke is the heart. Smoking marijuana increases the heart rate (Kuhn). There have been a number of good studies showing that marijuana lowers the hearts pumping efficiency during exercise, essentially increasing the work load on the heart (Kuhn). These effects on the heart could pose a risk to those who have heart disease or high blood pressure.

Contrary to popular belief, marijuana is an addictive drug that can have long-term effects on the user. Marijuana addiction is a phenomenon experienced by more than 150,000 individuals each year who enter treatment for their proclaimed addiction to marijuana. People trying to quit often report irritability, sleeplessness and anxiety. Drug craving can be physical or psychological. Drug craving and withdrawal symptoms can make it hard for long-term marijuana smokers to stop abusing the drug. Addiction affects the victim’s behavior. The more the victim will uses the drug, the guiltier they feel, and the more depressed they become. The victim will put marijuana above everything, including family, friends, their job, and their savings to spend on the drug. The drug will become the most important thing in their life. Their relationships and job performance will go downhill.

Marijuana also has a toll on ones professional life. The drug interferes in the user’s job, and the way the user performs at school. A study among postal workers found that employees that have tested positive for marijuana on a pre employment urine drug test had 55% more industrial accidents, 85% more injuries, and 75% increase in absenteeism compared with those who tested negative for marijuana use. Workers who smoke marijuana are more likely to have problems on the job than their co-workers. Marijuana smoking will increase absence, tardiness, accidents, workers compensation claims, and job turnover. When people use marijuana, they have a hard time doing task that require accurate co-ordination. When students use marijuana they disregard their responsibilities in the classroom. They tend to put assignments off more often. Students who use marijuana also do not stay focused and pay attention as much as students who do not use marijuana. The student would rather be smoking marijuana than sitting in class and learning. Some marijuana using students neglect their responsibilities in the class room that they drop out of high school and try to be a part of continuation school of some sort but are not influenced enough to attend the school.

Marijuana has few advantages. That also have their own way of coming back and hurting the user. Marijuana should not legalize for it damages people and the way the go about at life.

Success is not an easy accomplishment to obtain in American society. Many people work hard all their lives and do not achieve anything, such as Peralta in the article”15 years on the bottom rung”. However, Richard Rodriquez, in the novel Hunger of Memory, did work and became successful in education. The only flaw in Rodriquez’s success was that he lost touch with his family. In order to prosper in this American society you must assimilate and educate yourself.

Assimilation is an important factor to flourish in American society. Richard Rodriquez assimilated to American society by learning English. “I was obliged to hear my mother and father: “Speak to us en ingles” (speak) .Only then did I decide to learn classroom English. Weeks after it happened. One day in school I raised my hand to volunteer an answer. I spoke out in a loud voice. And I did not think it remarkable when the entire classroom understood. That day I moved very far from the disadvantaged child I had been only days earlier.” (Pg. 21 Hunger of Memory) .Learning English helped Rodriquez become a better communicator with people and also let other people be able to understand him. Rodriquez learned that in society you should be able to speak the majority language in order to be able to succeed. Another example of assimilation can be found in the article “15 years on the bottom rung”. In this article Mr. Zannikos is able to assimilate with American society by obtaining his citizenship. The article states that “He was deported, but after a short while he managed to sneak back into the country. Three years later he married a Puerto Rican from the Bronx. The marriage lasted only a year, but it put him on the road to becoming a citizen” (Pg. 4 “15 years on the bottom rung”). This short marriage was able to make Mr. Zannikos an American citizen. This enabled him to be able to become successful by having citizenship. He was able to be able to buy and own his own restaurants. Unfortunately this does not go the same way for Peralta in the article "15 years on the bottom rung". Peralta does not obtain his citizenship throughout this article. Since Peralta does not have his citizenship he can be mistreated by the people around him including his landowners and employers. "15 years on the bottom rung" states that "Because he is here illegally, Mr. Peralta can easily be exploited. He cannot file a complaint against his landlord for charging him $500 a month for a 9-foot-by-9-foot room in a Queens apartment that he shares with nine other Mexicans in three families who pay the remainder $2,000-a-month rent." he is able to be mistreated by his landowner because he does not have his citizenship but maybe this could have been lessened if he was more educated.

Education is also another important property to have to blossom in American society. An example of this can be found in the novel Hunger of Memory. Because of Richard Rodriquez success he was able to have many choices where to teach. There were rumors on where he was going to teach set by his co-workers when on asked him “Is it true that you have gotten an offer from Yale?” This success that he had in education led to many job openings for him. Another reason why education is so important can be found in the article “15 years on the bottom rung”. In this article Peralta, A Mexican immigrant, can not speak English that well. The article claims that “Even now, after 15 years in New York, Mr. Peralta speaks little English.” He tried English classes once, but could not get his mind to accept the new sounds. So he dropped it and stuck with Spanish, which he concedes, is “the language of the bus boys”. If Peralta would have taken those English classes he probably would have been able to have a better job because he can speak the language that everyone else can also. Mr. Zannikos does not contain this. He already knows how to speak English so he does not have to go through all the troubles that Peralta has to go through. Even though success comes with great pleasure, usually there is a downside to it.

While trying to obtain success in American society there are some setbacks in it. These setbacks can be brought up in the novel Hunger of Memory. Rodriquez loses his relationships with his family. “I see them now, my brother and sisters, two or three times a year. We do not live so very far from one another. But as an entire family, we only manage to gather for dinner on Easter. And Mothers Day. Christmas.” (Pg 207 Hunger of Memory). His higher education has separated himself from his family. After all those years of working hard and becoming smarter he had no time for his family or let alone a social life in general. This shows that no matter the circumstances or how you’re doing it for all the good success still comes with a price.

In order to become successful in American society one must assimilate end be educated. Without these two traits it will be hard to become a successful individual in America.

Success is not an easy trait to obtain in the American society. Many people work hard all their lives and do not achieve anything such as Peralta in the article "15 years under the bottom rung". How ever Richard Rodriguez, in the novel Hunger of Memory, did work hard and became successful in education. The only flaw in Rodriguez success was that he was losing touch with his family. In order to prosper in this American society and educate yourself.

Assimilation is an important aspect to have in order to flourish in the American society. An example of this can be found in the novel Hunger of Memory. In Hunger of Memory Richard Rodriguez throws away his culture in order to succeed. In order to succeed in America you must be able to fit in with everyone else. If you are different than other people than they will look at you weird and will not see you equally. In the article "15 years under the bottom rung" by Anthony Depalma, Depalma wrote that Zanniokos reaches success by assimilating to the American society. One way Zannikos reaches success is by obtaining his citizenship by getting married. This helps him be able to go out and purchase property and not be able to get paid below minimum wage from employers. Zannikos becomes successful by purchasing a restaurant in New York where he lives. He is able to serve the richest celebrities in the city. His assimilation brings him closer to success in America but he most likely would of had more success if he was educated better.

Education is also another important property to be have to blossom in the American society. An example of this can be found in the novel Hunger of Memory. Richard Rodriguez goes as high as you can with education and becomes successful in his field. He is offered numerous teaching jobs at universities but turns them down because he thinks he does not deserve them. He thinks that they are only offered to him because of the use of affirmative action. Another example of education affecting success in America is the effect it had on Peralta in the article "15 years under the bottom rung" by Anthony Depalma. Peralta had little education when he came to America. He tried taking an English classes but he could not accept the new sounds so he dropped the class and stuck to spanish. If he would have stayed in that class than he would have probably been able to be a better communicator with people so he would have an easier time getting a job of some sort.

In order to become a successful individual in America you should be well educated and assimilate to the culture. There are other traits you should have in order to become successful in the American society but education and assimilation to the culture are the top ones.
